Cool Cat Cards Music Chords deck helps students achieve a difficult, but invaluable aspect of becoming a musician − music chord recognition. Learning to read music and learning to play music are both much easier when you can recognize the chord progression. Even if the chords are arpeggiated.
What are Music Chords?
When musicians play a Music Chord, it generally means that they are playing three of more notes at the same time. A chord is multiple notes played simultaneously.
Why Chords Matter to Me?
Chords are used to create harmony (or harmonic progression) in music. Harmony is the basis for both music composition and improvisation. When composing music, one will generally follow a chord progression, often even for melodic development.
Why do I Need to Recognize Them?
In order to advance beyond developing a basic single note melody and to begin to work with more complex harmonic function, students must be able to quickly identify the chord progression being used in any given piece of music.
What is a Broken Chord?
A Broken Chord is called an arpeggio (from the Italian "to play upon the harp"). When you play an arpeggio, you play each note separately in sequence, usually from lowest pitch to highest.
Chords and Improvisation
Without fluency in chord progressions, a student can neither compose nor improvise effectively. A musician is typically thinking about what chord they are moving to next or they are developing a melody based on the chord or chord progression they are in.
Etymology of the word "Chord"
The original word "cord" was Middle English for "to be in agreement". The spelling developed an "h" in the early 1600s.
